    SNAKES IN THE TEMPLE

"Snakes in the Temple - Unmasking Idolatry in Today's Church"
    by David Orton

Published 2004 by Sovereign World International (UK)

"This book is a true gem. How the first two chapters sort out our confusion between the goal and the prize is worth the price of the book itself, while the chapters in section 2 on the Jezebel spirit and idolatry in ministry ought to be mandatory for all who are in ministry. And the book ends with a profound truth - there will be no openness in the heavens until God finds brokenness on earth.
I whole-heartedly recommend this book, especially to those in ministry who have a vision and hope for revival."

From the Foreword by Marc Dupont (Author and International Conference Speaker)

    What's it all about?

"Snakes in the Temple" is a book which castes a biblical vision of an awesome future for the church and speaks to the hindrances to that future.

Section 1, therefore, provides a prophetic forecast of that future - one of increasing revival and worldwide spiritual awakening; and secondly, an initial diagnosis of the core problem of idolatry in the church as the primary hindrance to revival.

Section 2 continues with a more detailed diagnosis and description of that idolatry, and finally,

Section 3 gives the prescription for breaking its power and restoring the presence of God, accelerating worldwide spiritual awakening and the final harvest.

    Some Penetrating Questions

'Snakes in the Temple' asks some penetrating questions. Why, for example, despite our best efforts at church growth, including our pursuit of new apostolic and cityreaching paradigms, is not the Western church seeing the same breakthroughs as the Third World? We import to our cities the latest apostles of cityreaching, leadership, and multiplication but within a short while of implementation, their strategies seem to stall. Why is this?

It is time to ask questions and for the Western church to do some serious soul searching. The author, pursuing these very questions, traces the roots of the problem to a hidden idolatry in the church. Tracing it from its second century origins to its inroads in the contemporary church he argues that until this is resolved we will not see the breakthroughs we long for in the West. In fact, the reason we are not seeing them is simply because God is resisting it! No amount of new church technology will shift God, or the strongholds over our cities. It is time to unmask this hidden idolatry and issue a fresh call to the church. It is time to engage in a heart-process with God to resolve it.
